Water Supply Protection And The Safe Drinking Water Act Of 1974
That safety of that glass of water you are about to drink is protected by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA protects each person by providing safe water. The Safe Drinking Water Act ensures that the water coming into your home is safe from contaminants, pollutants and is free from any other factors that could endanger your health. It is nice to know that the EPA is there making sure that your water is safe, clear and tastes as good as it looks.
The Safe Drinking Water Act came about in 1974 by the Environmental Protection Agency. It was enacted to make sure that drinking water is safe water for consumption and to help stop the widespread pollution of natural water resources. It is enforceable by the law and has two parts to the regulations. One is punishable by fines and sentences and the other is recommendations.

Water Supplies – Contamination And Health Issues
The United States has the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that source water is safe. You do not have to worry about contaminated water like some countries face on a daily basis. For some areas, water supplies are not available so they must use dirty, contaminated sources of water that cause dysentery and other illnesses. These people cannot run out to the corner store to buy a bottle of water.
You have to know how source water receives its fresh input of water. When it rains the water soaks into the ground or goes into lakes, rivers or streams. It is during this process that it can pick up much of it’s contaminates, which are the byproducts of industrial waste, human waste and even pesticides from farms. It is difficult to swallow, literally, that your water supplies may be infused with excrement.

The Bottled Water Industry And Water Standards
Have you ever shelled out a couple of dollars for a bottle of water? If you have, then you are not alone. Millions of people purchase bottled water every day because they believe it is safe water, or rather safer water, than the stuff that comes out of their taps. This may not be the truth and the bottled water industry doesn’t want you to know. Some bottled waters are very pure but there are others that are probably no better than your tap water. Know the difference and understand why people buy bottled water.
Bottled water has become very popular but there is a new wave sweeping the world. Vitamin water has become the favored choice among most water drinkers. They believe that bottled water standards have improved to the point where it is now acceptable to add preservatives, flavorings and vitamins. They are willing to shell out two bucks just to have the extra advantage of getting some safe water with a dose of vitamins and calcium to kick start their day and ensure proper nutrition. The bottled water industry is well aware of this and is continuously introducing new brands.

Public Water Systems And The EPA
If a sewer line were to break, then your public water system may be in danger. Contaminates can seep through the ground to the source water and could make you very ill. The local water company is responsible for providing you with fresh, clean water but even they have to answer to a higher power than just the local county laws. The EPA makes sure that the United States has some of the cleanest water in the world through their regulations and laws.
Drinking water standards from the bottled water industry, on down to the water systems used by the public are governed by a branch of the government. This office is the EPA which stands for Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA has guidelines on how pure or impure the water source can be before they consider water contamination to be present. City water treatment plants have to operate under their jurisdiction and codes if they want to avoid fines and risking public health. Each year the EPA publishes statistics on the cleanest and the best drinking water to be found in the United States.

Improving Drinking Water Quality
You are what you drink; or rather your health is influenced by what you drink. Put down that soda pop right now. Not only does it contain empty calories but it is preventing you from getting enough water in your diet. Water is essential to life. Animals, vegetation and the human body need it to survive. Drinking water quality is really important nowadays as more pollutants and waste seep into the ground. Boiled or processed water can be terrible tasting but that does not mean you have to give up there.
The best drinking water may not come from well water. Water from a well or other natural source water can sometimes be polluted from nearby runoff. Once many years ago it was safe to drink from a stream but now, with pesticides running rampant, you could find yourself with a case of dysentery or worse. But the bottled water industry is not proving to be much better. Recent investigations have shown that bottled water is often taken straight from the tap. It is no better than your tap water except there may be flavors added to disguise the chemical taste of purification. Plus you need to consider the environmental aspect of so many plastic bottles. This is our planet and well-being we are talking about.
